Development Cooperation

Italy is traditionally among the major donors to Zimbabwe, through its contributions to the European Union’s aid programs as well as the main United Nations organisations (FAO, WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNDP). The first Joint Commission agreement on technical and economic cooperation between Italy and Zimbabwe was signed in 1982 (the second, in 1988 and the third, in December 1991).

Country Data Sheet

A number of leading Italian companies have been present in Zimbabwe for many years and because of this and the great works they have carried out in the country (i.e. the imposing Kariba Dam built by the Consortium Salini-Impregilo), these companies boast a certain prestige.  The huge potential of the Country’s economic growth has attracted a growing number of Italian companies, as proven by the participation of an ever increasing number of companies within the stands organized by the Embassy during the most important trade exhibitions.  Machinery, spare-parts and chemical products make up the bulk of Italian exports while the products imported from Zimbabwe are mainly steel industry related as well as ornamental stones, cotton and tobacco.
