ITALIAN REPUBLIC DAY

The Italian Embassy in Zimbabwe celebrated Republic Day, which this year marks the 80th anniversary of the institutional referendum of June 2, 1946. The guest of honor at the ceremony was the Chief of Protocol of the Zimbabwean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ambassador Nesbert Samasuwo.

Before an audience comprising representatives of the diplomatic corps, members of the business, cultural and local civil society sectors, along with first- and second-generation Italian residents living in Zimbabwe, the Embassy organized a fashion show featuring garments created by Italian and Zimbabwean designers, which were presented last May at the Venice Biennale. This exhibition, made possible thanks to the support of the Italian Embassy, will subsequently be donated to the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. The institutional event was enhanced by a musical concert featuring Italian and Zimbabwean artists and an exhibition of food and wine products typical of Italian cuisine, which was inscribed last December as an Intangible provided by private sponsors, Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The setting was completed by some of the iconic models from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Ducati as well as New Holland tractors.

In his remarks, Ambassador Giacalone highlighted the historical significance of this anniversary, recalling how, in the referendum of June 2, 1946, “the Italian people were called upon to express themselves freely and directly on the form of government, choosing the Republic and embarking on a new institutional path founded on the principles of freedom, equality, and civic participation. These values find their full expression today in the Constitution of our Republic,” The Ambassador continued, adding that “eighty years later, this anniversary represents a moment of shared remembrance and reflection on the country’s democratic identity, as well as an opportunity to reaffirm Italy’s unwavering and total commitment to peace, dialogue among peoples, and international cooperation.”

Ambassador Giacalone then emphasized that today’s celebration serves to highlight the solid and historic ties of friendship and collaboration between Italy and Zimbabwe, which are developing within a framework of growing dialogue and cooperation in various sectors of common interest.

The Ambassador concluded by expressing his gratitude to the Zimbabwean Authorities, the Diplomatic Corps, the Italian community and all friends of Italy who participated in the Republic Day celebration.
