Emergency Travel Document – ETD
If you find yourself abroad in an emergency situation (for example, as a tourist in transit you have to leave and you have lost or have been robbed of your passport) and you have no way or time to request the issuance of a new passport, the Italian diplomatic-consular representations, present both in Europe and in non-European countries, can issue a provisional travel document (also called E.T.D. – Emergency Travel Document). It is a document valid for a single return trip to Italy or to the State of permanent residence or, exceptionally, to another destination.

To obtain it, you must go to the Consulate bringing the following documentation with you:
- declaration of theft or loss of the passport or other travel document, made to the Consulate pursuant to articles 46 and 47 and with the warnings referred to in art. 76 of Presidential Decree 445/2000;
- reporting the theft or loss or destruction of your passport or other travel document to the local police authorities;
- 1 photograph according to the ICAO Photo Guidelines;
- the travel document, if possible.
It should be borne in mind that on pre-holidays and holidays this form of assistance may be precluded due to the closure of the Offices themselves and deferred – except in situations of proven emergency – to the first working day.
Always remember to keep, in a place other than the one where you keep the original documents, a photocopy of the most important documents (passport, identity card, credit card) to facilitate assistance procedures in case of theft or loss.
The ETD can also be issued to citizens of European Union member countries upon obtaining formal authorization from a diplomatic-consular representation or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the applicant’s country of origin and the following documentation:
- declaration of loss or theft of the passport or other travel document, made to the Consulate pursuant to articles 46 and 47 and with the warnings referred to in art. 76 of Presidential Decree 445/2000;
- reporting the theft or loss of your passport or other travel document to the local police authorities;
- 1 photograph of the person concerned according to ICAO Photo Guidelines;
- travel document of the applicant, if possible.
